Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance. If you haven’t heard of this day before, you’re not alone. I’m glad you’re here; I’m glad you’re educating yourself about this day which is devoted to remembering those we’ve lost due to anti-transgender violence. It comes at the end of Transgender Awareness Week (Nov 13-19), and this year it falls on Sunday, November 20. Today. (You can read more about this week and today here.)

I don’t have a lot of words today. Grief fills me, and I honor that grief by allowing it to exist and flow.

My heart is heavy for those we’ve lost, for those we will lose in the future. I am sending extra love and support to anyone who falls beneath the big, wide, beautiful trans umbrella. Trans identifies anyone whose gender doesn’t match the one, or even sit comfortably with, the one they were assigned at birth. Though not all nonbinary, agender, and genderqueer people consider themselves trans, they can choose to be included under the trans umbrella. I shall light a candle for those we’ve lost.

Hug your loved ones tight. If you are not someone who knows of any transgender individuals, ask yourself, what have you done to make them comfortable and to support their rights?
